Project Ara is one of the ambitious projects of Google. Google's main concept behind project Ara is to enable consumers to design and customize their smartphones, and the ability to add functionality to it as they like it to be. The project hopes to start an era of do-it-yourself smartphones and the Google is pretty determined that it's not targeting geeks.

Presently when a person buys a smartphone he checks all the specifications and qualities of the phone but in this competitive world always new technology keeps coming,so phones with some high configuration gets introduced in market. But after purchasing one phone you cannot upgrade to higher specification for that you need to buy whole new phone. Project ara is going to change this concept completely.

Basically project ara is an initiative that aims to develop an open hardware platform for creating highly modular smartphones. The platform will include a modular frame which will hold smartphone modules of the owner's choice, such as a display, camera or an battery. It would allow users to swap out faulty modules or upgrade any particular module. It will convert your phone into a modular device. That means each pieces of the device can be taken apart from the device and it will not harm to the entire device. If a person wants to enhance its battery life it can be done by replacing battery module with a new one. This is no difficult task at all and requires little effort. Just detach the older one and then attach the new module and the rest of the phone's system will do the remaining job. This will provide longer lifetime cycles for the handset, and will help to reduce the electronic waste as well.

Based on modular concept Google released a prototype named Spiral 2 .The features of spiral 2 includes support for phone calls over 3G networks. Other features include a high resolution display, a 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, a USB charger and processors provided by Marvell and NVIDIA. This is just a prototype but based on it,phone with similar features will be introduced into market very soon. And another aspect of modular phones is that their cost. Google has decided to keep the price as low as $50 for simple phone with basic calling facility which can be further enhanced and upgraded according to the requirements of the customer.
