While people will tell you that dressing in professional attire is just a superficial convention, but the truth is that in the workplace, the way you dress signals your attitude towards the company you work for and your position in the company. It's not always easy to decide what fits and what doesn't into professional attire but if you follow these rules then you can't go wrong.
CONSIDER THE SUIT
While suits aren't appropriate at every workplace, there is always a reason for them. A suit may seem extravagant, but it is basically designed so that there is less focus about the clothes. If you have ever thought why so many professionals all over the world wear very similar suits, it is because they don't want people to focus much on what they're wearing.
The choice of perfume and the amount you wear depends on the nature of your workplace. For instance if you are the manager of a warehouse with lots of open space, you can go away with wearing a heavy floral perfume. However, you should be restrained from wearing heavy perfume if your office is poorly ventilated.
The coffee mug which you use at work for having coffee probably should not have anything printed on it. It creates distraction, and such mugs rarely enhance one's appearance. The logo of a company can be an exception to this.
The way you dress at work should not make you stand out. Looking either clumsy or too much groomed and fashionable can have this effect. The idea is to blend in and dress appropriately as per your job so that people focus remains more on your work and less on your appearance.
DON'T SHOW EXCESSIVE SKIN
This rule doesn't apply only to women alone but men also. The point of men's business suits, are to cover their bodies so that less attention is drawn to the physique. Just keep it simple and classy; as you are at a place of work.
KEEP IT TRADITIONAL
Your outfit could be perfect according to the work place you are at, but if it's made with wrong materials then it will only get you negative attention. Rubber shoes or Leather suits are not meant for the workplace. Look for traditional materials for your work wear.
Don't overdo with your makeup unless you live in a culture where it's absolutely normal. Like your clothing, your makeup should be conservative so that you won't stand out from the crowd at work. Try and find the makeup which appropriately suits your level.
Although appearance is important, it shouldn't be against your comfort zone. If you aren't comfortable, the quality of your work will go down. There are ample of professional styles, just find one for yourself that is most comfortable for you.
IT HAS TO FIT RIGHT
While your choice of clothes might be appropriate and comfortable, they might not fit you. Maybe you have recently gained or lost weight some of it. It's obvious sometimes those clothes will no longer fit; keep them aside for the time being.
DON'T SMOKE OUTSIDE THE ENTRANCE
It just doesn't look good when people see you outside the front entrance of the office with a cigarette dangling from your mouth. If you need to go for a smoke break, choose a place where your boss does not see you
